Stay Connected to Your Roots with LMBCS Bangla School.

A place for children growing up in Greater Vancouver to discover Bangla, connect with Bengali culture and build friendships along the way.

Free · Ages 5–12 · Every Other Sunday

A little bit of Bengal, every other Sunday.

Vancouver Bangla Vidyalaya is LMBCS’s community-run Bengali language school for children ages 5 to 12.

Through language and time spent together, the school gives children growing up in Canada a welcoming place to strengthen their connection with Bangla and the culture that surrounds it.

Classes are free, and families do not need to be LMBCS members to participate.

Language is one Way We Stay Connected.

For children growing up far from Bengal, learning Bangla can be about much more than words on a page.

It creates another way to speak with family, understand stories and traditions, participate in community life and feel connected to a culture that is part of who they are.

Bangla Vidyalaya creates a space where children can explore that connection together — surrounded by other young people growing up between the same worlds.

From six students to a new generation.

Bangla education has been part of LMBCS since its early years.

In the 1980s, a small weekend school operated from the Vishva Hindu Parishad temple in Burnaby with around half a dozen children. Early volunteer teachers included Purnima Gupta, Maya Bannerjee, Tirthankar Bose and Archana Datta.

For several years, the school also received support for educational materials through the federal Heritage Preservation program.

What began with a handful of families and dedicated volunteers continues today through the people who give their time to pass Bangla on to another generation.
